Outdoor target archery is the most popular type of archery dicipline practiced in the UK. It is shot outdoors on an open flat field in both Recurve and Compound divisions. Target archery is the only form of archery accepted in the Olympic Games and probably archerys most recognised form..
There is great diversity in the types of rounds shot (See table) but the standard format used around the world is known as the FITA and has been detailed below.
INDIVIDUAL FITA COMPETITION
Qualification round
The athletes shoot 36 arrows at each of the following distances:
Men: 90, 70, 50 and 30 meters
Women: 70, 60, 50 and 30 meters
This means that, in total, 144 arrows are shot. This round is shot during the first 2 days of competition to select the top 64 men and top 64 women in each division and the top 16 men's and women's team in each division. At the 2 long distances (90m and 70m for men, 70m and 60m for women), each archer will shoot 6 arrows within 4 minutes on a 122cm face. At the short distances (50m and 30m), each archer will shoot 3 arrows in 2 minutes on a 80cm face.
The top 64 men and top 64 women in each division of the qualification round will proceed to the Elimination Rounds.
Elimination and Final rounds
The archers (top 64 men and top 64 women) will be placed on a single Elimination Pairing Chart according to their standing at the end of the Qualification Round. The other numbers show how the winners would progress if the higher-ranked archer won each match. From this stage on, the only distance is 70 meters for both men and women. The archers shoot 3 ends of 6 arrows: in total 18 arrows on a 122cm face. They have 4 minutes to do so for each end.
The eight winning archers will go on to the Final Round. Each athlete will shoot 4 ends of 3 arrows (12 arrows) on a separate target. All finals matches will be shot with the archers alternating their shots. Each archer will have up to 40 seconds to shoot one arrow.
TEAM COMPETITION
The top 16 men's and women's teams in each bow division will be selected using the combined top three scores from the Individual Qualification Round. All members of a team must be of the same gender, same bow division and from the same country. If less than 17 teams are available in any division or class, then only the top 8 teams will go to the Elimination Matches. The target will be 122cm at 70 meters for both men and women.
One match consists of 27 arrows: 3 ends of 9 arrows per end. Each team member shoots 3 arrows per end (3 arrows x 3 archers x 3 ends = 27 arrows). All 3 archers on a team will be required to finish shooting before the prescribed time limit (currently: 3 minutes). The archers may shoot in any sequence and may shoot 1, 2 or 3 arrows each time they are on the shooting line.
The Finals Round starts with the semi-final competition. The losers of the semi-finals shoot for the Bronze and the winners for the Gold and Silver Medals.
